Appearance
The Smilers are identified almost exclusively by two features: a wide, luminescent grin full of sharp teeth, and a pair of glowing white eyes. Their bodies — if they have them — are invisible in the darkness they inhabit, either because they are dark enough to be perfectly camouflaged, or because they do not have a conventional physical form at all. The true nature of their biology remains unresolved. Those who have come close enough to see more than the face have not produced useful reports.
The smile is permanent. It does not change with the entity's state or mood. It is the same whether the Smiler is at rest, stalking, or mid-attack. This is among the most psychologically unsettling properties they possess — there is no readable expression, no way to gauge intent from the face.
Behaviour
Smilers inhabit darkness and appear to be attracted to light sources rather than repelled by them. Shining a light into a dark area does not drive them away — it draws them toward it. Pointing a light source directly at a Smiler has been documented to agitate it and trigger an attack response. The safest condition for avoiding them is, counterintuitively, extinguishing your light entirely.
When a wanderer is spotted but has not yet triggered an attack, Smilers will stalk at a distance — watching, following, waiting. The attack is not always immediate. They appear to wait for a specific trigger: panic, sudden noise, or rapid movement. As long as the wanderer maintains slow, calm movement and keeps eye contact, the Smiler will not advance.
They are typically solitary, but encounters with multiple Smilers simultaneously have been documented. Smilers are known to be antagonistic toward Frowners — if both are present, they will often disengage from a wanderer to pursue one another. This has been used as a survival strategy in extreme circumstances, though engineering such a situation is not reliable.
Known Biology
The glowing features are produced by a luminescent biological substance. Their body mass, where it exists, appears to be a dark, formless material — occasionally described as resembling black smoke or shadow given physical weight. Some documented forms include loosely humanoid shapes, canid-like silhouettes, and — in documented cases near the ceilings of exterior dark levels — large twisted flying forms. Whether these represent different species or a single shapeshifting entity is not confirmed.
⚠ Survival Protocol
Do
- Maintain steady eye contact if spotted
- Move slowly and deliberately away
- Stay as quiet as possible at all times
- Turn off light sources if one is nearby and not yet aggressive
- Use Smiler Repellent (Object 3) if available
Do Not
- Run, unless it has already begun to charge
- Shine a light directly at it
- Make sudden loud noises
- Look away or break eye contact
- Show visible signs of panic
