Entities

Documented Inhabitants of the Backrooms

What is an Entity?

The Backrooms are not empty. Whatever force or accident created these spaces also populated them — with things. The word "creature" has been largely set aside in favour of entity, partly because the word is more accurate, and partly because "creature" implies something familiar. Very few of the things documented in this archive are familiar.

Every entity is unique. They vary wildly in form, behaviour, intelligence, and origin. Some resemble distorted versions of animals or humans. Others defy any classification from the world you came from. Some appear to have no physical form at all, existing instead as sounds, shadows, or wrongly-shaped absences in a room. What they share is that they belong here, in a way that you do not — and most of them know it.

The majority of entities documented in this archive are hostile. This does not always mean they will attack immediately, or obviously. Some hunt by instinct. Some appear to study their targets before acting. Some are drawn by sound, light, movement, or the particular quality of fear you carry when you realise something is wrong.

However — not all entities are dangerous. A small number are neutral, some are indifferent, and a few have been documented as actively non-threatening. Do not let this lower your guard. Misidentifying a hostile entity as a passive one is among the most common causes of death recorded in this archive.
